Oh là là!

Everyone knows these three words used to express surprise or enthusiasm. You can use this expression in many situations, which is why it’s hard to give it one precise meaning. Sometimes you also hear “Ouh là là!”

C’est la vie

French people use this phrase to refer to something that can’t be changed, to say that we have to accept things as they are.

Comme ci, comme ça

This is very handy for answering the question “How are you?” If you're not feeling great, you can say “Comme ci, comme ça.” You can also say “couci-couça” in this context.

Au pair

A young “au pair” is someone who, for a certain period, chooses to live with a host family abroad in order to better understand the local culture. Generally, they take care of the children and help with household chores in exchange for food, accommodation, and pocket money.

Déjà-vu

You often hear this expression in songs or English-speaking movie dialogues. “Déjà-vu” is the feeling that you’ve already seen or experienced something before.

Bon appétit

No explanation needed—it’s clear! Many words related to gastronomy (“baguette”, “foie gras”, “champagne”, “crème brûlée”, etc.) are also well-known abroad. These are just a few examples, but the list doesn’t end here. Look for more expressions on your own—I’m sure you know some already!
