The day of the earth

I hope you’ll agree that protecting the environment is of fundamental importance. That’s just as well, because 22 April is Earth Day. With everything our beloved planet constantly has to endure, it certainly deserves a day where it is the focus of attention! In fact, International Mother Earth Day initially began as an environmental demonstration, first held in 1970 in the United States. Today, around 180 countries participate, representing more than 500 million people. This mobilisation is vital when we consider that our environment is under threat, primarily from climate change and deforestation, but also pollution of our air and water. What will we leave to future generations if we continue to act with disregard for the place where we all live? We have adopted bad habits which have a negative impact on the natural environment. That is why we urgently need to change our behaviour and teach our children to do the same. Earth Day is a fantastic opportunity to undertake “green” initiatives. You could work with your teacher to organise activities at your school. For example, you might encourage your classmates to buy local products, build a compost bin, clean up the banks of a river, cut down on food waste or raise awareness about recycling among your friends. What about at home – what should you do there? Don’t forget that it’s not enough to just think about protecting the environment on 22 April – every day should be an opportunity to adopt eco-friendly habits. Consider whether you could collect rainwater to water your garden or plants, avoid using chemical products for cleaning, don’t waste energy, and opt for organic foods wherever possible. If you manage to do all that, you will have accomplished your goal!
