what they said about Antibes?

  • Graham Greene : "I have known Antibes for more than forty years and I have lived here for twenty. It stands alone as the only town on the Côte d'Azur that has kept its identity and its soul, and it is also the only one where I truly feel at home".

  • Guy de Maupassant : "I had never seen anywhere so startlingly beautiful. The little town {......} juts out into the sea in the middle of the vast bay of Nice. The waves lap at its feet, the sea spray surrounds it. Above the ramparts the houses cling one to another beneath the two towers that rise up to the sky like the two horns of an ancient helmet {.....}. It was one of those rare delectable moments of supreme happiness that stay etched in your memory for evermore".

  • Claude Monet : "I paint the little fortified town of Antibes, made golden by the sun, with the pink and blue mountains and the Alps forever covered in snow behind {.....}. I struggle so hard to capture this sun. For what luminousity the sun here lends to the landscape! It should be painted with gold and precious stones. There is such clarity and such purity of tone in the pinks and the blues that the slightest wrongly-guaged dab of colour can taint it. What I will take with me from here is that same softness of white, of pink and of blue illuminated by the magic, fairytaleish light".

  • Jacques Prévert : "I regret my blindness, I never came to Antibes as a child. But the sea.....I only dreamt of the sea. Now we have met, and the two of us get on very well together".
